Include the number of cassettes, every format marking you can see, any camcorder model details, the condition of the tapes and how you want the digital copies supplied. You do not need the original camcorder, but its make and model can help identify how the MiniDV recordings were made.
What should I photograph on each cassette?
Take one clear photograph of the cassette face and another of its case or handwritten label. Look for:
- the **MiniDV** or **DV** logo;
- **HDV**, **DVCAM**, **SP** or **LP** markings;
- a brand and cassette model number;
- dates, names or event descriptions; and
- any numbered order you want preserved.
Do not open the cassette or touch exposed tape. The US National Archives notes that cassette markings can help identify a video format, while the physical cassette alone does not reveal exactly what was recorded on it.
Why should I mention HDV?
HDV can be recorded on a cassette that looks like an ordinary MiniDV tape. Sony’s documentation explains that HDV records high-definition video onto a DV-format cassette, but HDV recordings need compatible playback equipment and cannot be assumed to play on a DV-only device.
Rewind Digital offers MiniDV conversion as a confirmed service, but **HDV is not a standard confirmed format**. If you see HDV on the cassette, camera or case, include that in the enquiry so compatibility can be checked before a quote or appointment is agreed.
Does the original camcorder matter?
It is not required for a normal enquiry, but the model number can be useful. Sony’s support information confirms that MiniDV camcorders play MiniDV tapes only, while other small cassette systems—including Hi8 and Digital8—have different compatibility rules.
If you still have the camcorder, photograph its model label rather than posting or dropping it off without agreement. Do not repeatedly test valuable tapes in an old camera that is dirty, faulty or chewing tape.
What condition details should I report?
Mention any:
- visible mould, dust or debris;
- cracked or loose cassette shell;
- tape protruding from the cassette;
- unusual smell or signs of damp storage; or
- previous playback problems.
Do not play or attempt to repair a visibly damaged cassette. Repairs and specialist recovery are not standard confirmed services and require separate discussion.
What else should the request include?
State the total number of MiniDV tapes, whether you prefer the included digital download or an optional USB, and any birthday or anniversary deadline. Allow up to one week from the agreed drop-off; the actual completion date is confirmed with the quote.
See the MiniDV-to-digital service and current pricing, then request an estimate. Rewind Digital is based in Tadcaster, with local drop-off and collection by appointment. The form saves an estimated order request; payment is not taken online.
