For Rewind Digital, allow **up to one week from your agreed drop-off appointment**. The completion date is confirmed with your quote, so the clock does not start when you first submit the website form. If you need the files for a birthday, anniversary or funeral, mention the date before booking.

Why is the turnaround not instant?

Tape conversion involves more than copying a computer file. The correct playback equipment must match the cassette format, the tape’s condition must be considered, and the resulting digital copy needs to be checked.

The US National Archives notes that producing a high-quality copy of video records can require specialised playback equipment, hardware and software. Its digitisation guidance also distinguishes between creating a digital copy and checking that the resulting record is accurate and usable.

An old cassette may look normal from the outside but still present playback problems. A tape with visible mould, debris, a damaged shell or protruding tape should not be test-played without prior discussion.

What affects the completion date?

The main details to include are:

  • the number of VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV and Hi8 tapes;
  • any uncertain or mixed formats;
  • visible damage, mould or previous playback problems;
  • labels such as SP, LP or HDV;
  • whether you want the included download or an optional USB; and
  • the date by which you need the files.

Recording length can vary even between identical-looking cassettes. A label such as E180 describes capacity rather than proving how much footage is present. Format, recording length, condition and availability are therefore checked before the order is confirmed.

HDV, Digital8, Video8, repairs and specialist recovery are not standard confirmed services and need a separate check.

Can I request a faster turnaround?

You can state the deadline, but do not assume that an urgent job is available until it is confirmed. The safest approach is to enquire early, give the exact date and avoid arranging a drop-off until you have an agreed appointment and completion date.

Submitting the website form creates an order request and estimate; it does not take payment online or guarantee a slot.

How should I prepare the order?

Count each physical cassette once and keep its original label. Group tapes by format where possible, but do not open cassettes or touch exposed tape. Make a short list of the labels and any known dates or events.

Read how the service works and check the current prices, then request an estimate. Rewind Digital is based in Tadcaster, with local drop-off and collection by appointment. Original tapes are returned with the digital copies.
